At Westbourne we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience, which will lay the foundation for future language learning. It helps the children to develop communication skills including key skills of speaking and listening and extends their knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives the children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.
Every class from Pre-School to Year 4 enjoys a weekly French lesson taught by a specialist teacher, who is also a native speaker. French is taught in an enjoyable and active way through songs, rhymes and games in a French classroom.
Year 5 and 6 have two lessons a week - the methodology used is a combination of Visual, Aural and kinaesthetic approaches, proving extremely effective in catering to children’s different learning style. Linguistically the focus is on developing children’s knowledge of key verbs as this is key to be able to construct simple sentences rather than concentrating on teaching lists of words.
